Maps
I've found it very helpful to incorporate visual representations into nearly all of my coursework and that's resulted in many many many maps.
The following is a sample of maps from various courses and projects. |
As part of a semester long TriBeCa project for my Design IV class, I created an activity map to guide exploration within the neighborhood.
The map is intricately folded and shows a historical timeline of TriBeCa on the inside flap, then a step-by-step process of locating the neighborhood then finding local activities. |

This is a map for my Design Development course's final exhibition.
After compiling a portfolio of all our deliverables and research documents, I "plotted" the information onto a semester long process map that compared our process vs. team enthusiasm. |
Team Concept Development Map
|
This is a supplement to the Exhibition map above. One stage in the process of our semester long Design Development project was to fuse ideas from other teams into our team's concept.
This map outlines the ideas taken from each team and how it was incorporated into our concept or process. |

This is a process map of the research and steps taken during my Design Research Methods course. This is the project that culminated in the Red Hook Report, which can be found in this section under Books. |

This map was created for my Design II class. We spent a few hours observing Grand Central Station in order to sift through the many layers of information that exists in that space.
I was most intrigued by how long groups or individuals would stand in the main concourse as hundreds of people moved in and out of the room all around them. So, I took a series of photos and plotted the # of individuals and how long they stood stationary. |

Books
These books were created for various courses during my time at Parsons. I was responsible for both layout and content. |
In my Typography & Visual Design course I was responsible for researching a typeface and creating a biography about it. This four page bio is included in a compiled book of typeface bios that was created by the class.
I chose Centaur, a renaissance style typeface that was used by the Metropolitan Press for many years.
This is the resulting layout, biography, and typographic sample. |

This book contains two sections bound together as a flip book. Both are short, tongue-in-cheek outlines of the gentrification of TriBeCa. The reader of the book only reads the upright page on the right-hand side. Upon reaching the final page, they flip the book upside down to read the Defense section, which leads them back to the front cover.
The first section is focused on the gentrifier and is a how-to on invading a neighborhood. This section outlines the process of gentrification as it has played out in many New York City neighborhoods and nationwide. The second section is focused on residents who hope to defend their neighborhood from gentrification. |

Red Hook is a neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY that has gone through dramatic changes in recent years.
In the fall of 2007, as part of a semester long project, my team (George Falero, Vicki Wang & C. Monique Connely) and I explored the issues of gentrification, transportation, employment, and income distribution within this neighborhood.
Our research culminated in this co-authored report. |

Branding
| This section contains two branding exercises I have done during my coursework. |
Refract
Refract is a fictional glass manufacturer I created for my Design III class in Fall 2006. The process began with choosing a word and developing a company from it, then branding that company.
Using cutouts, I created a series of inspiration boards on which to base the visual language of the brand. I then translated this into the logotype, typeface, and final advertisement poster. |

Disco Uranus
Last semester I seized the rare opportunity of working on a personal project for class. For my Corporate Design final project I developed the branding for a former party that was hosted by my roommates and myself called Disco Uranus.
This branding implementation can best be seen on the Disco Uranus page found below. |
